Thumbtack Removes Instant Booking: Why You Should Think Twice About Online Booking for Junk Removal and Dumpster Rentals
Thumbtack, a major platform in the service industry, has announced the removal of its Instant Booking feature, citing feedback from pros like us. Starting today, customers can no longer book appointments directly through Thumbtack. Think about that—a massive platform, known for convenience, has decided that the downsides of instant booking outweigh the benefits. This change highlights a point I’m often asked about: Should junk removal and dumpster rental companies offer online booking?
It sounds appealing on paper, doesn’t it? Business owners often think adding a booking system will lead to more conversions, a smoother transaction process, and a better experience for customers. The logic is simple: make it easier for people to book, and they’ll book more often. But Thumbtack’s decision tells a different story. Their experience shows that instant booking might not be the ideal solution for every industry—and that’s something I’ve believed from day one.
At Grizzly Junk Removal, I intentionally choose not to offer online booking. Why? Because I want control over my scheduling process. When a customer calls or emails, I’m able to discuss their needs, set expectations, and choose appointment times that work for both of us and fit best within my logistical plan. This flexibility isn’t just about making my day easier; it’s about maximizing efficiency and profit. By managing bookings manually, I can ensure I’m not overloaded or mis-scheduled, which ultimately benefits the customer too.
Customers, in my experience, are more flexible than we often assume. When I provide a few options that suit my team’s schedule, most customers are happy to adjust. They appreciate the straightforward approach and don’t feel inconvenienced—provided we do what we say we’ll do and show up on time. Compare this to a scenario where a customer books through an online system. If they select a slot that doesn’t work well on my end and I have to reschedule, I’ve now disrupted their plans. They thought their booking was set, and suddenly they’re dealing with a change they didn’t expect. Even if it’s a minor shift, it feels like something was taken away, creating frustration before I’ve even shown up.
The reality is, most customers don’t care if they can’t book online, as long as you’re responsive. For over 10 years, I’ve handled every call, every email, and built strong relationships in the process. With more than 100 roll-off dumpsters and five trucks in rotation, I receive a high volume of calls weekly. The logistics are complex, and allowing customers to self-schedule would quickly throw things into chaos. Managing bookings myself ensures I can keep everything running smoothly, without sacrificing customer satisfaction.
So, here’s my take on Thumbtack’s announcement: If you’re in the junk removal or dumpster rental business, consider holding off on online booking. Focus instead on building customer relationships from the first interaction. Answer promptly, communicate clearly, and control the schedule in a way that benefits your business. From my experience, customers don’t just appreciate this approach—they prefer it.✌️
