Should You Charge Extra for Wheel Protection in Dumpster Rentals?

There are products designed specifically for wheel protection in dumpster rentals. These are sturdy plastic platforms placed on the ground, which cradle the dumpster wheels during drop-off. They effectively distribute the weight and prevent surface damage, such as indentations or cracks, especially on delicate driveways made of stone or brick.

My company uses a simpler method: standard wooden planks. Typically, we use 2x4 boards around 5 feet in length. When dropping the dumpster, we position the boards under the wheels and along the rails to evenly distribute the weight. This approach works well, is cost-effective, and ensures the customer’s property is protected.

Should You Charge Extra for Wheel Protection in Dumpster Rentals?

In my opinion, no. Here’s why: people hate extra fees. Sure, some fees are unavoidable—like overweight charges, additional day fees, or disposal fees for prohibited items—but surface protection shouldn’t be one of them. Damage prevention comes with the territory of running a dumpster rental business. If a dumpster has the potential to damage a customer’s property, it’s the company’s responsibility to mitigate that risk without charging extra.

I believe surface protection should be a standard practice for all dumpster rental companies. Not only does it protect your customers’ property, but it also safeguards your reputation. Going the extra mile—without being asked—sets you apart. It’s like providing “white-glove service” in a rough-and-tough industry. Customers don’t expect that level of care, so when you deliver, it leaves a lasting impression. This attention to detail can turn a one-time customer into a loyal client.

Plastic Molds vs. Wooden Boards

While I don’t use the plastic molds, I’ve considered them. They’re designed to keep the wheels in place and protect the surface, but you can easily replicate their functionality with wooden boards and a few screws. It’s cost-effective and practical—especially since you can often source the wood from materials you pick up in your dumpsters.

Plastic molds are durable, but they come at a higher cost. Wooden boards, on the other hand, are inexpensive, easy to source, and do the job just as well. Both methods protect the surface, but it’s all about what fits your budget and business model. If you’re looking to keep costs low without compromising quality, wooden boards are a solid choice.

A Real-World Example

Last year, one of our customers had a delicate brick driveway. By using our simple wooden planks, we were able to prevent any surface damage, and the customer was so appreciative that they referred us to a neighbor. That’s the kind of impact these small details can have. It’s not just about protecting the property—it's about creating a positive experience that leaves customers happy and eager to recommend your business.

Final Thoughts

Protecting your customers’ property doesn’t have to come with an added fee. It should be a standard part of your service. Whether you choose to use plastic molds or wooden boards, the key is to prioritize protection and increase the customer experience and their satisfaction. By doing so, you not only avoid potential complaints but also create a memorable experience that keeps your customers coming back. And that, in the end, is what matters most.
