How to Handle Hot Tub Removal Like a Pro

When it comes to junk removal and hauling crap, certain jobs come with unique challenges. Hot tub removal is one of those tasks that can test your team’s skills, patience, and ability to think outside the box. But the reality is, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to get the job done and make money. Hot tubs are heavy, bulky, and sometimes require a little creativity to get them out of tight spots. So how do you approach these jobs efficiently and profitably?

Cutting It Into Pieces

One of the most effective ways to handle hot tub removal is by cutting the tub into manageable pieces. This is often necessary because hot tubs are notoriously difficult to move as a single unit. We almost always use a reciprocating saw (also known as a Sawzall) to cut the tub into quarters or smaller sections. This makes it far easier to carry and load onto the truck, reducing the amount of manpower and time needed for the job.

When cutting the tub, don't be a jackass, make sure to follow safety protocols. Wear the appropriate protective gear, such as gloves, safety goggles, and long sleeves, to protect against flying debris and sharp edges. You also want to be mindful of any electrical or plumbing connections that need to be disconnected before starting the cutting process.

Using a Sled for Transportation

Depending on the layout of the property, moving the hot tub to the truck can be one of the trickiest parts of the job. If the hot tub is located on a grassy area or a location that makes it hard to carry, we’ve found that using a sled can be a game-changer. This is a simple yet effective tool for moving heavy objects across soft or uneven terrain. With a couple of team members pulling the sled, you can drag the tub across the grass without causing too much strain or damage to the lawn.

Having the right equipment is key to getting the job done efficiently. If a sled isn’t available, you can also use heavy-duty tarps, ropes, or moving straps to help slide or carry the tub across the property.

Setting Your Price Based on Factors

Hot tub removal is not a one-size-fits-all job, and the price can vary depending on several factors. We typically charge between $350 to $650 for hot tub removal, and the exact rate will depend on:

Size and weight: Larger, heavier tubs will require more labor and equipment to move.

Accessibility: If the hot tub is in a hard-to-reach location or requires significant dismantling, it will increase the labor involved.

Distance to the truck: If you need to move the tub across long distances, particularly through tight or uneven spaces, this can add to the cost.

Disposal fees: Certain areas may charge higher disposal fees for hot tubs, especially if they are not easy to break down or recycle.

It’s important to assess the job beforehand and determine the best approach to pricing it. Clearly communicate with the customer about what the job entails, including any additional charges for difficult access or extra labor.

Final Thoughts

Hot tub removal can be a high-reward job, but it’s also a physically demanding one. The key to success is using the right techniques and tools to minimize labor while ensuring safety and efficiency. By cutting the tub into sections, using equipment like sleds for transport, and setting your price based on the specific challenges of the job, you can maximize both your profits and your team’s productivity.

Hot tub removal may not always be easy, but with the right approach, it can become a reliable and profitable service for your junk removal business. Stay flexible, know your costs, and keep refining your processes to make each job smoother than the last.✌️
