Fix the Broken Windows in Your Digital Space

There’s a theory called the Broken Windows Theory. Ever heard of it? It’s simple but eye-opening.

Researchers found that when a neighborhood looks messy—broken windows, graffiti, trash—it invites more crime. But when it’s cleaned up—fresh paint, repaired windows, no trash—crime drops significantly.

Why? Because your environment shapes your behavior.

Now think about the digital space you spend your time in. Social media, Facebook groups, email, group chats, newsfeeds—it’s like walking through a neighborhood with thousands of broken windows every single day.

Negativity. Noise. Distractions. Nonsense. The same photo of a pile of junk guys pick up. All conditioning your thoughts, your mood, and your focus faster than any physical environment ever could.

The Problem

Most people don’t realize they’ve chosen to live in this digital chaos.

The good news? You can choose to fix it.

Just like cleaning up a messy neighborhood, you can rebuild your digital environment so it pushes you forward instead of holding you back.

Build a Digital Space That Works for You

Here’s how I do it:

1. Unfollow the Noise

Take five minutes to clean house. Unfollow accounts, leave groups, and unsubscribe from emails that don’t add value to your life or business. You control your feed—make it intentional.

2. Surround Yourself with Growth

Follow people and join communities that align with where you want to go. Places that inspire action, provide clarity, and keep you focused.

3. Protect Your Attention

Set limits. The internet is infinite, but your time isn’t. Be intentional about how and where you spend it. This is a major key because it's so easy to get lost in the scroll if you don't have intentions for why you're doing it in the first place. It will consume you alive.

But the thing is—it's not just about cutting out distractions. It's also about how you engage with the content you do consume. Instead of passively scrolling through your feed, start observing what catches your attention. Pay attention to what sparks your creativity, what makes you think differently, and what inspires action.

Whenever you come across something that resonates with you, whether it's a post, an idea, or a story, don't just consume it—observe it. Ask yourself why it stands out. What can you learn from it? How can you use that insight in your business or personal growth? By actively observing content instead of mindlessly scrolling, you start to curate a digital space that creates rather than just consumes.

Why This Matters

In business—and especially in the service industry—your focus is everything.

You wouldn’t let your trucks run with bald tires or a disgusting cab interior, right? So why let your mind operate in a chaotic digital space? When you're not on the job and have time to do this, utilize your time well. The days are long, and the years are short. You must set the right intentions and direct your focus intentionally, or you'll wind up wasting it, feeling like "you don't have time." That's never actually the case...

This saying is partly true: "If you want something done, ask a busy person." What I think it should actually say is, "If you want something done, ask a productive person." There's a big difference between being busy and actually being productive. And your digital environment is just the same. Set yourself up to be productive online, not just busy.

When you clean up your online environment, you:

• Make better decisions.

• Stay clear-headed when challenges hit.

• Build connections with people who actually add value.

It’s the same principle as keeping your equipment in good shape—because a messy workspace leads to messy results.

Take a Look Around

Today, I challenge you to stop and assess your digital neighborhood.

• Who are you following?

• What’s filling your feed?

• Is it helping you grow or distracting and pulling you off track?

Fix the broken windows. Clean up your space. Then see how much sharper, more focused, and intentional your day feels.

You’re in control of this. Start building the environment that works for you.✌️
